Our hormones can be very difficult to keep in balance through all stages of life. Women have to contend with the reproductive hormonal process throughout their lives while men can also have problems with hormonal imbalances with little treatment available through the usual channels.

Our Hormonal System

The Endocrine system is a group of glands that release chemicals called Hormones. It is closely linked and is controlled by the Hypothalamus. So many areas of our lives are affected by our hormones and not just the reproductive ones – adrenalin, our stress hormones, insulin, thyroid hormones can also affect how we are able to live and behave. The Hypothalamus is also closely linked to the nervous system through the Pituitary gland, so when we get stressed our hormonal systems are compromised.


Causes of Hormonal Imbalance

Our modern lifestyles and society are having an adverse affect on our hormones.

  • Environmental factors such as pollution, crop sprays, household chemicals, toxic cosmetic ingredients
  • Stress such as a poor work / life balance, traffic jams, late trains to the more serious loss or bereavement, financial pressures, moving home, health issues etc.
  • Poor nutrition such as ready meals, processed foods, Soda drinks, junk foods, pastries and so on.
  • Poor habits – Little exercise, smoking, too much alcohol
  • Insufficient sleep

Balancing your hormones

Each one of these factors can have a cumulative effect over time and we need to regularly keep them in check.

  • Stress can easily be ignored on a daily basis but can easily mount up without being noticed until hormonal symptoms show and it can become harder to cope with everyday life.
  • Nutritional deficiencies can be improved by eating more wholefoods especially cruciferious vegetables, such as broccoli, cauliflower and cabbage, chickpeas, beans and lentils, complex carbohydrates such as ‘brown’ rice & pastas.
  • Improve your hydration by drinking six to eight glasses of water a day.
  • Buy natural household cleaners, polishes and cosmetics

Avoid or reduce intake of:

  • Caffeine
  • Sugar
  • Alcohol
  • White flour
  • Food in plastic containers or wrapped in plastic and never heat in the microwave as the food absorbs the plastic chemicals

Give your body time to adjust to these changes; it has taken some time to get to a state of imbalance and so it will take some months to renew. Do visit your GP or other healthcare provider if you have any concerns about your health.
